Invest in your people

with one comment

41T9YVNKTNLIn a past post, I suggested that it it always a good idea to invest in education and training for yourself. The best way to stay on top of new technologies, new processes, or just learning new tricks is from education.

The same also holds true if you are an employer. You’ve heard it time and time again. Your employees are your biggest asset. It’s true. They are committed to your organization and want to do anything they can to help it succeed. In fact, their success is dependent on your success. One of the best things you can do to help your employees to help you is to get them training.

Many sales professionals are given a formal training curriculum before they hit the streets. If they are new to the sales profession, then this training will help them develop their techniques. If they are experienced, then at a minimum the training will help with learn the company’s product/service and how to be effective quickly.

Why would you not offer the same to the rest of your staff? From support staff to senior management, everyone has something new they can learn.

Do you have a formal education or training program in place in your company? If so, what have you found to be effective for your people? If not, are you planning to develop one?

Climbing the ladder

with one comment

For a moment, let’s pretend that the fundamentals of the economy are strong.

How are you climbing the ladder these days?

That has got to be one of the most difficult tasks facing professionals during the best of times. As you approach management positions and beyond, the opportunities start to get smaller and more competitive. As part of a group in their late 30’s to early 40’s, my generation has been trailing behind the baby-boomers our whole lives. This is a generation now looking toward retirement (remember, we’re pretending the fundamentals of the economy are strong). Behind us are the ultra-me Gen Y generation looking to either move up or move on quickly.

What do you do to position yourself to take that next step? What challenges are you facing and what are you doing to prepare? Do you have any stories to share about how you’ve successfully negotated this path?

Honey…I’m home.

The moving truck has left. The boxes are unpacked. And here’s our new home. The blog has the new look and the new address. I’m still using WordPress and all of the old posts seem to have made the move without any left behind.

On the off chance that you didn’t read my last post left at the old address, moving to this new place was a function of me taking my own advice. Since Buzzworthy Media no longer exists as a stand alone entity, my focus has shifted to building the “Jeff York” brand. It may be October, but I still haven’t forgotten my New Year’s resolution of building my own personal brand.

So, here you’ll find all the weekly business and marketing thoughts and discussions you’ve gotten used to seeing at the old location.

I’d love to hear feedback on the move and the new look. This is also the perfect opportunity to open the floor up for a discussion on what you’d like to talk about in the forum. I don’t write this blog for me. Well, mostly not for me. I write it to open discussions about marketing and business in general for you, the business owner or professional, looking for the nugget of information to launch a whole new thought process.
